Abdel Hady al-Kassaby is the Grand Sheikh of the Sufi Trends. He is also the Sheikh of Al-Kassabeyya Tareeka. Al-Kassaby was appointed the Grand Sheikh of the Sufi trends in April 2010 by a Presidential decree after the death of the former Grand Sheikh Ahmed Kamel Yassin in 2008 after being contested for two years.
Al-Kassaby was a member of the then-ruling National Democratic Party and an appointed member of the Upper House of Parliament, affiliations which raised questions about the infiltration of politics into Sufi orders. This led to legal battles that continued over a year and a half until the issuance of the presidential decree.
Al-Kassaby was also a member of the Shura Council (second house of the Egyptian People’s Assembly) for Tanta governorate.
