Hazem Salah Abu Ismael

Born in 1961, Hazem Salah Abu Ismael is a Cairo University Law School graduate and son of the famed late Sheikh Salah Abu Ismail. He announced his candidacy for presidency in May 2011. Abu Ismael espouses some conservative Salafi values. For example, in a recent Al-Tahrir television interview, Abu Ismail vigorously advocated for an Islamist state, whose ruler, similarly, would “ensure that when one walks in the street, he does not see any practices that contradict Islam,” such as a “head-naked” woman or a man “smok[ing] shisha at a coffee shop while everyone is praying”. He moderates his tone by insisting that the “return to Islam should be done softly...should happen gradually,” in a matter of years and not days.
